My remit is to work with young people from the age of 12 - 25 years or
so. This has involved many exciting and interesting challenges over the
last few years!!
Each year I have one main school where I will commit to going in for 3/4
periods per week. This is to help the RE staff and school Chaplain with
a variety of different activities.
I am also often in some of our other secondary schools in the Diocese
to help with retreats, prayer sessions, preparation for school
liturgies, talks on Youth to Lourdes, World Youth Day, Diocesan Youth
events, ice-breakers and even a Careers Evening lately! Other school
work involves an S6 Vocations Retreat, which is organised jointly with
the Vocations Director, when representatives from our 8 Catholic
Secondary Schools come together for a day of group work, information
sharing and sometimes silly games!
Apart from having this captive audience I organise a monthly Youth Mass
which brings young people together from around the Diocese. We ask a
different parish to host it each time and Bishop Philip is always there
to celebrate Mass and to listen to what everyone has to say. Mass is
followed by dinner, normally pizzas, and some short activities, games or
questions sessions.
We have a Diocesan Youth Event for Advent and Palm Sunday and encourage as many young people as possible to attend this as well as other
Diocesan Events not necessarily specifically for young people.
I am part of our Diocesan Youth to Lourdes team and along with the other
Youth Officers I organise a youth group to attend each World Youth Day.
My remit is wide and varied which means that no two days are the same
and I love it!
I have a Youth Commission who work with me to organise and deliver these Youth Events and without them none of this could happen.
